Criteria for Membership
Potential Candidates for Spring 2009 Induction

NJHS is founded on the following five principles:  scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.  Selection to NJHS is a privilege.  Students do not apply for membership in the NJHS; instead, they provide information to be used by the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership.
Scholarship Requirement:  Second semester 7th and 8th graders are eligible for membership if they have a 3.75 Cumulative Grade Point Average.
Students must be enrolled at Randall Middle School for at least one semester.  Only military personnel are exempt from this requirement.  In these cases, the student must get a recommendation from his/her previous school principal.

Service Requirement:  Service is generally considered to be those actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service.  Students are encouraged to contribute acts of service within their school and/or community.  Service hours need to be documented by the adult in charge of the activity.  Examples of service:  Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, religious groups, volunteer service for elderly, poor, or disadvantaged.  Once inducted into Randall NJHS, members can only use service hours that are organized and sponsored for Randall NJHS members for the purpose of Randall NJHS.  Service projects organized and sponsored by Randall NJHS  cannot be used for another service club.

Leadership Requirement:   A student who exercises leadership displays the following:  exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals, contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school, exemplifies positive attitudes, inspires positive behavior in others, successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliability and dependability, and is a leader in the classroom, at work, an in other school or community activities.Citizenship Requirement:  The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and respect of the American form of government and demonstrates mature participation  and responsibility through involvement with such activities as Scouting, community organizations, and school clubs/organizations.Character Requirement:  A student of character demonstrates the following six qualities: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship.   Students of character uphold principles of morality and ethics, cooperates by complying with school regulations, observes instructions and rules, manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, and avoiding cheating in written work.  NJHS candidates must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average in Conduct of 3.75 starting in 6th grade.

Candidates are required to have one teacher from Randall Middle School recommend them for membership.
